Geochemistry 2
Licence Sciences de la Terre Parcours Geology, geophysics, georesources (UFAZ) (délocalisé en Azerbaïdjan)

Description

This course introduces the use of geochemical tools and approaches for understanding and reconstructing the history of waters in the hydrosphere, encompassing geothermal waters. The use of geochemical tools, such as major dissolved elements, stable isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen, and radiogenic isotopes ratios (87Sr/86Sr, 143Nd/144Nd) will be explored to identify the origin of waters, the present-day and past circulation paths, and mixing processes. Temporal aspects will be addressed through cosmogenic isotopes (3H, 14C, 36Cl) to determine the residence time of underground water. All these geochemical tools will be employed to investigate the geothermal resources of some hydrothermal systems or the widespread contamination of groundwaters by arsenic in the Bengal Gulf, one of the most significant public health concerns in human history.
