Titre : Geometrical evolution of faults: Field observations and laboratory experiments
Lieu : EOST, 5 rue Descartes, salle du conseil.
Résumé :
Earthquakes occur when rock bodies slide one against each other along fault surfaces. The geometry and the roughness of these surfaces are therefore having a significant impact on earthquake physics. The geometrical evolution of slip surfaces is analyzed by observations and measurements in field outcrops and by laboratory experiments. We show that the slip surface evolution is involved with wear of asperities that smooth the surface, but also with off-surface damage that increase roughness.
