Hydrothermal alteration associated with zones of fractures at the interface between sedimentary cover and granitic basement in the Upper Rhine Graben. Application to geothermal wells at Rittershoffen (Alsace, France). 

Abstract

Exploitation of deep geothermal energy is booming in France and especially in the Region Alsace with the launching of the LabEx G-EAU THERMIE PROFONDE at Strasbourg which is a scientific research project co-funded by the French government under the program « Investissement d’Avenir ». In industry, new projects are set up for electricity production and district heating networks for urban areas too. The objective of this PhD in Geoscience is a better understanding of the underground in Alsace mainly focused on the sediments/basement interface because it is the geothermal target of many future industrial projects in the Upper Rhine Graben (URG).

The scientific goal is to understand the structure of the natural brine displacement (the geothermal resource) that constitutes convective cells. To evaluate the convective regime in the underground, the PhD work will rely on borehole data of new geothermal wells in Rittershoffen drilled down to 3 km deep, through Tertiary and Secondary sediments till the top of fractured crystalline basement. A detailed analysis of borehole data (geology, geophysics and hydrogeology) and a comparative study of outcrop in the Region Alsace will allow to define natural circulation pathways in the bottom of the sedimentary cover and the top of the basement. Convection stability will be examined according to the fracture network and local fault zone properties. A part of results will be correlated with thermo-hydromechanical modeling in order to determine the dimensions of convective cells. The thermal signature of faults will be an important challenge too as well as spatial relationships between fractures and brine displacements (per ascensum, per descensum and lateral motions). PhD achievements will be a hydrogeological and hydro-thermal conceptual model of the sediments/basement interface. This work will contribute to define geothermal targets in the URG and thus to secure industrial projects with an optimization of geothermal resource.
