Energy Transition and Geothermal Energy
Licence Sciences de la TerreParcours Geology, geophysics, georesources (UFAZ) (délocalisé en Azerbaïdjan)
Description
Part 1:
Global shift from fossil fuels to sustainable, low-carbon energy systems.
This course introduces the key drivers of the energy transition, including climate policy, technology, and market dynamics.
Students learn how renewable energy sources integrate into modern power grids.
A strong focus is placed on geothermal energy as a stable, baseload renewable resource.
The course explains geothermal principles: heat origins, reservoirs, and thermal gradients.
Students study exploration techniques, drilling methods, and resource assessment.
Case studies highlight successful geothermal projects around the world.
The course examines environmental impacts, regulation, and safety considerations.
Economic models and cost-benefit analysis of geothermal projects are introduced.
By the end, learners understand geothermal’s role in accelerating a resilient, sustainable energy future.
Part 2:
Minerals essential for renewable energy, electrification, and battery technologies.
It introduces key metals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, copper, graphite, and rare earth elements.
Students study geological processes that form critical mineral deposits.
Mining techniques and metallurgical processing methods are examined in detail.
Environmental impacts, including water use, tailings, and carbon footprint are assessed.
Social and ethical dimensions of mining, including labor and community rights, are analyzed.
Global supply chains and geopolitical risks surrounding critical minerals are evaluated.
Economic concepts such as price cycles, investment, and demand forecasting are covered.
Emerging technologies, recycling, and next-generation batteries are explored.
Compétences requises
Basic scientific literacy (high-school level physics, chemistry, and Earth science).
General understanding of energy concepts, such as heat, electricity, and natural resources.
Comfort with numerical reasoning for interpreting simple graphs, datasets, and energy metrics.
Interest in sustainability, climate issues, or renewable energy technologies.
Ability to follow technical explanations in English
No prior experience in geothermal energy required—the course is designed for beginners.
Basic understanding of minerals, rocks, and geological processes.
Familiarity with environmental systems and human impacts.
Understanding of markets, supply/demand, and economic decision-making.
Optional but helpful: basic knowledge of geology, thermodynamics, or engineering principles.
