Description

This course introduces fundamental concepts of water resources as applied to geoscientists. Because most liquid freshwater is stored in the subsurface (soil and rocks), the course focuses primarily on groundwater. Students will learn about:

  • The water cycle, the storage of water in each component, and the interactions between them.
  • Groundwater dynamics at regional and local scales.
  • Principles of groundwater flow and solute transport.
  • Earth material properties and how they control groundwater quality, flow, and solute transport.
  • Hydraulic properties of hydrostratigraphic units, and how to measure them.
  • How to identify and mitigate human impacts on groundwater resources.
  • How to build a hydrogeological conceptual model.
  • An introduction to numerical groundwater-flow modelling.

Compétences requises

Mathematics 1
Physics 1 and 5
Geosciences 1 and 2
Geology 1

Compétences visées

By the end of this course, students should be able to understand the fundamentals of how to:

  • Identify and quantify the main water inputs and outputs of a watershed.
  • Assess the suitability of different Earth materials for groundwater storage and flow.
  • Make predictions about groundwater dynamics (quantity and quality) in a given area.
  • Interpret hydrogeological field data and integrate them into a conceptual groundwater model.
