Inverse Methods
Licence Sciences de la TerreParcours Geology, geophysics, georesources (UFAZ) (délocalisé en Azerbaïdjan)

Description

This class provides a thorough introduction to inverse methods in geophysics. Its primary goal is to help students acquire the theoretical basis and practical tools needed to infer Earth properties from observational data such as seismic travel times and gravity anomalies. Students will learn how to formulate inverse problems, examine their inherent challenges—including non-uniqueness, instability, and uncertainty—and apply appropriate mathematical strategies to obtain meaningful geophysical interpretations.
The course will cover both linear and nonlinear inversion methods, including least-squares solutions, regularization techniques, and probabilistic frameworks. Students will apply these techniques to real or synthetic datasets and interpret the resulting models in a physically consistent way.

Compétences requises

A background in linear algebra, statistics, and Python programming will greatly enhance students’ ability to engage with the material.

Compétences visées

By the end of the course, students will be able to design, implement, and critically evaluate inverse solutions for a wide range of geophysical problems.
