Description

During this course, the diversity of sedimentary basins will be presented, with their geodynamical contexts and their mode of evolution through time. Several examples will be provided to train students to recognize the type of sedimentay basins (divergent vs convergent and plate boundary vs intraplate). Following, a particular attention will be paid to basin infill characteristics. To do that, basic concepts of sequential stratigraphy and related sedimentary processes will be adressed. Application of these concepts to reconstruct spatial and temporal distribution of sediments in sedimentary basins through seismic profiles, outcrops and sedimentological sections will be carried out during exercices. Finally, the respective role of major factors that govern stratal architectures and facies partitioning, such as eustasy, subsidence, sediment inputs in terrigenous detrital systems or sediment production in carbonate systems will be discussed. By the end, this course aims at providing students sufficient knowledges to deduce the origin, the nature and the modalities of sedimentary infill of any sedimentary basin.
