Oscillators : simple harmonic motion, damped/undamped free oscillation, forced oscillation, multiple spring-mass system with and without coupling Waves : Waves Notions, Wave equation, Progressive and stationary waves, Mathematical description of the propagation of waves, D’Alembert wave equation (with various examples in mechanics
and electricity), Progressive and stationary waves (boundary /periodic conditions, with examples, modes, harmonics), Reflection and refraction at the interface of two media, Fresnel coefficients, Impedance. Limit of plane wave model and need of Wave packet, Superposition of two waves (beat), N waves, continuous limit, Temporal and spatial extension of the wave packet, Phase velocity and group velocity/ dispersion of wave packet. Optics : Interference-Diffraction, Condition of obtention, relative phase difference, Front division and amplitude division, Limit of geometric optics, Diffraction by finite opening, Temporal and spatial coherence, Diffraction by periodic pattern-examples and applications.
