"Sedimentary basins" is composed of a theoretical part where the different types of sedimentary basins and associated resources are studied based on major geological observations. From the examples of current research, the various processes controlling the evolution of sedimentary basins are exposed, which allow studying the deformation steps recorded in the sediment pile. This course aims at the acquisition of skills in the analysis of geological systems. It also aims to show how to couple different analytical approaches and study the interactions between different factors (tectonics, climate). The well-documented examples allow describing and characterizing the evolution of sedimentary systems from the source (mountain range) to the deposit area (sedimentary basin).

Meanwhile, courses and TD in basin analysis familiarize the students with specialized software (Petrel, Petromod), to master the basic tools and grasp the opportunities offered by this software to acquire technical skills valued by future employers. Moreover, students develop their data integration capacity in multidisciplinary fields (geophysics: seismic, bathymetry, gravity, magnetics, geological: structural, stratigraphic, petrophysics). Many notions acquired are reactivated and applied. Finally, the students develop specific skills such as seismic interpretation (PETREL) and oil reservoirs modelling (PetroMod), which require long-term learning. Nevertheless, the students acquire basic principles and learn the importance of a rigorous approach of observation and modelling.
