Headwater Conservation and Regenerative Hydrology
Master Sciences de la Terre et des planètes, environnementParcours Continental Water Sustainability (ouverture à la rentrée 2026-2027)
Description
Access to water in adequate quantity and quality represents a major challenge. Climate change forces agriculture—the largest water user—to increase irrigation or to switch cultivars. Aquifers are increasingly exploited, vegetation structure (especially in forests) is changing rapidly, and headwater ecosystems need to be pre-adapted to future, more intense climate events.
In this field course, students will visit climate-stressed headwater systems and wetlands and develop climate-adapted approaches to maintain sustainable water supply for both ecosystems and human use. Approaches include “water sowing,” wetland protection and restoration, as well as hard engineering solutions such as basins. Special attention will be given to different forms of conservation (designated sites) and to the continuum between varying levels of land-use intensity and complete site protection.
