Competence Goal
The module familiarizes students with different aspects of scientific research in general and in the context of Water Science and Engineering in particular. They can reflect on principles of good scientific practice and research ethics, and develop awareness of scientific integrity and reproducible research. Students can explain the role of publications, peer-review processes and research projects and funding in academia. They have a broad understanding of the research landscape, gain insight into scholarly publishing practices, and they can analyze and interpret scientific articles in these contexts
Content
The module consists of a lecture series and an accompanying seminar.
In the lecture, experienced researchers share insights into their perspectives on research in general, as well as on specific topics in Water Science and Engineering. Topics covered include:
- fundamentals of good scientific practice and research ethics,
- the lifecycle of scientific publications from the perspectives of authors, editors, and reviewers,
- the role of peer review and research funding,
- scientific writing and principles of reproducible research, including data management.
In the seminar, students work in small groups on a selected scientific research article. The authors or subject-matter experts are available for discussion. The groups:
- analyze the structure, argumentation, reproducibility and citation practices of the article,
- look into the review and editing process, and examine subsequent citations and their context,
- prepare a presentation of approximately 15 minutes to summarize their findings,
- receive feedback and respond to questions from their peers.
