Description du contenu de l'enseignement

Writing is an essential part of any scientist's or engineer's life. As an author, it is your job to make the reader's job easy. Writers spend years learning their craft, and so should you. In this course we will help you develop some essential skills that will help you along your journey. These skills will be directly applicable to your research project.

This part of the course will cover three main topics :
  • How to write clear scientific English prose
  • How to construct clear figures / tables
  • How to organise a writing project and keep to your deadline
After a theoretical lesson on these three topics, you will be able to exercise your skills first on small-scale exercises, then on the bibliographic review you will produce for the last part of this course, as well as in all reports / papers you will produe from now on.

This part of the course will be evaluated on the basis of a timed re-writing exercise.

Compétences à acquérir

By the end of this course students will be able to
  • analyse a piece of scientific writing and improve its clarity by applying three basic stylistic rules: remove unnecessary words, use the active voice, write using verbs;
  • construct images and tables that confer added meaning;
  • plan a writing project around its three main phases: pre-writing / first draft / revised draft.
